La Empresa Metalúrgica Vinto (EMV), the new state company running the Vinto tin smelter in Bolivia, has rejected a proposal that it takes on an extra 150 workers, according to Bolivian newspaper La Razon.

The 12,000 tpy plant was forcibly nationalized in February as part of the Bolivian government’s strategy of expanding its role in the production and marketing of natural resources. This followed the absorption of thousands of former co-operative workers on to the payroll of the state mining company Comibol late last year.

However the ministry of mines has rejected the idea of expanding employment at the smelter in order to safeguard the stability of the enterprise.
