Bolivian state-owned tin producer Empresa Metalurgica Vinto (EMV) aims to better its position on ITRI’s ranking of production by tin smelters, Vinto manager Ramiro Villavicencio told BNamericas. "We are currently seventh on this list and we want to take fifth place, behind Peru’s Minsur plant," he said.

EMV’s production increased by 24% to 11,805 tonnes in 2009 and is targeted to rise to 13,000 tonnes in 2010. The smelter’s all-time record level of production, at 19,959 tonnes, was reached in 1994. EMV will be installing a new Ausmelt plant in the next two years with a capacity to produce some 18,000 tpy of tin metal. The two companies it is aiming to overtake in the production league table are China’s Yunnan Chengfeng and Thailand’s Thaisarco.
