Mounting recession worries around the world might actually have a positive impact on tin usage in tinplate, as consumers in the industrialized countries increase their spending on canned foods.
The Daily Express newspaper reports that UK total sales of canned food rose by 7.2% in the year to June, with double-digit growth rates in sales of canned tomatoes, baked beans and desserts. The figures are based on the TNS Worldpanel survey of 25,000 British households’ buying habits.
David Burrows of retail magazine The Grocer said: “It is fairly logical that as people look to save money on their shopping bill they are going to choose cheap food and, relatively speaking, you can’t get much cheaper than canned foods.”
