Both mine production and refined tin production by Peru’s only tin producer, Minsur SA, is up on year-ago levels in the first three quarters of 2008.
Data on non-ferrous metals production released by the Ministry of Mines and Energy on Monday showed that mine output of tin-in-concentrate in September was 3,237 tonnes. This brings year-to-date production to 29,262 tonnes, marginally (0.3%) up on the same period of 2007. Meanwhile refined tin production in January-September was 27,835 tonnes, up 14.7% on last year. The comparison reflects the adverse impact of a major earthquake on production last year.
Minsur is now in the final stages of acquiring the Taboca tin division of Brazil’s Paranapanema, which will add some 10,000 tpy of mine capacity to that of its Peruvian operation.
