Workers will go on strike early on Wednesday at Peruvian tin producer Minsur’s San Rafael mine, and its smelter has already been hit by a strike, a union leader said on Tuesday. "The strike was approved and ratified and will start at midnight," Teofilo Quispe, a union leader at San Rafael told Reuters.
Minsur produced 16,238 tonnes of tin-in-concentrate in January-May this year, up 2% on the corresponding period of 2007.
Peru’s largest federation of mining unions said on Monday that a nationwide strike has started, in a move to put pressure on Congress to pass a bill that would improve labour benefits. Operations at most major copper, zinc and precious metals mines have also been affected.
