Minsur’s Funsur tin smelter near Pisco has been temporarily shut down following the major earthquake which shook southern Peru last Wednesday evening.
According to a union representative speaking to Dow Jones International News, “There was practically no damage in the plant, but many of the workers have lost their relatives and their homes so the company decided to shut down for 15 to 20 days. During that time it will carry out maintenance on the two furnaces”.
More than 70% of buildings in Pisco, where many Funsur employees live, are reported to have been destroyed in the earthquake.
The plant produced 20,285 tonnes of tin in the first seven months of this year.
