PT Koba Tin, Indonesia’s second largest tin producer, continues to conduct “business as usual” following intervention by the police at its smelter on Bangka island.
“It’s still business as usual” after the visit, Mathias Harryanto, director of administration, told Bloomberg news today. “We are now coordinating with the police on what the problem is. They were checking on procedures.”
Reports yesterday had suggested that the smelter and the company’s head office in Jakarta had been shut down by the police.
Koba, which is owned 75% by Malaysia Smelting Corporation and 25% by PT Timah, has been accused of buying tin ore from illegal miners, a charge which the company has said is baseless.
Koba produces some 2,000 tpm of refined tin, sourcing concentrates both from its own mining operations and purchases from small mines operating within its mining leases.
