Iluka Resources Ltd. of Australia reported production of 315 tonnes of tin pre-concentrate in the January-March quarter, up from nothing in the same period of 2007.

Tin is produced as a by-product at the Douglas mineral sands mine in Victoria’s Murray Basin. The zircon and rutile operation started up in February 2007 and reached capacity production last June. Tin is only present in the southern parts of the deposit, so production rates may vary significantly during the life of the mine through 2012, but could be up to 3,000 tpy of concentrates.

Iluka’s previous involvement in tin was as the majority shareholder in PT Koba Tin in Indonesia, prior to selling its stake to MSC.
