The government of Guangxi autonomous region is encouraging the merger of several non-ferrous metals companies, with Liuzhou China Tin to act as the leading player in the proposed combination, according to China Metals Daily News.

The Guangxi Non-ferrous Metals Group will be based in Hechi City under the direction of the state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Guangxi.

Reuters reported last month that apart from China Tin, which produced 10,927 tonnes of refined tin last year, the other main organisations involved will be the Guilin Mining Research Institute and Guangxi Pinggui Mining, which produces about 4,000 tonnes of tin a year.

Total tin production in Guangxi in 2006 was 32,051 tonnes, according to CNIA data, making it the second largest tin producing province in China after Yunnan. China Tin has been an acquisition target of other Chinese firms in the past two years, but the government of Guangxi is believed to be unwilling to allow firms based in other provinces to take it over.
