The Funsur smelter near Pisco, Peru, has been operating normally since mid-September, following the major earthquake that hit the area on 15 August.
Refined tin production in the nine months to September amounted to 24,265 tonnes, 20.7% down on the same period of 2006, but mine production by parent company Minsur has been running at almost the same level as last year and the smelter has spare capacity which can be utilized to catch up on refined metal production.
The plant suffered no significant structural damage in the earthquake, but many workers’ homes were destroyed, prompting the company to stop production for an extended maintenance break
