Electronics industry associations EICC and GeSI have published a first list of tin smelters which are compliant with its Conflict Free Smelter (CFS) programme, based on audits carried out since early last year. Five companies, accounting for about 25% of world refined tin production, have been found compliant, and others are regarded as ‘active’; in total 11 tin smelters are “currently active in the CFS process”.
The five compliant smelters are Malaysian Smelting Corporation, Minsur, OMSA, PT Koba Tin and Thaisarco.
ITRI is continuing to work with the CFS Programme on improvements to the auditing process and the technical content of the auditing reference documents. Some smelters may choose not to be audited until after that work is complete and the requirements are clarified in an updated audit protocol.
